Replaces New Tab tabs with a tab manager that displays all tabs visually as a document and can be used to access, close, and filter tabs by category using user-editable regular expressions applied to their URLs. It also sorts all tabs by URL.

This extension replaces New Tab tabs with a tab manager that displays all tabs visually as a document and can be used to access, close, and filter tabs by category using user-editable regular expressions applied to their URLs. It also sorts all tabs by URL.

Knowledge of regular expressions is required to use make full use of this extension.

This extension was designed to address what I perceive to be some shortcomings with other tab managers:

  1. They’re easy to install and forget. Replacing a fundamental operation like opening a new tab makes Tab Master Control hard to ignore.
  2. Tabs are not sorted automatically. People do not want to spend time manually sorting something as ephemeral as tabs. Tab sorting by URL requires effort once.
  3. Tabs must still be visually searched as a list or from within an arbitrarily sorted list of lists in which visual cues like favicons may be missing. If you know the content category, title, or URL of a tab, it should be possible to find it quickly by a direct search.
Permission to "Access your data for all websites" is required because the extension makes use of the screenshot API to provide tab previews. This extension does not inject scripts into any page nor does it collect data for remote use.

Improved control of existing extension components, more tab manipulation components, and localizations to Chinese and Spanish are forthcoming. In particular, the ability to create and destroy tab categories will be added and search for tabs by criteria such as "audio playing" will be added.
