Only one tab plays audio at a time. Start a video and the tab already playing is muted — when it stops, the sound comes back where you left it. Whitelist the sites that must never be muted, like calls and meetings.

Imagine you have a tab open in the background playing music. Now, in your current tab, you start playing a video. Smart Tab Mute automatically mutes the background tab — and unmutes it again once the video has finished.

No more hunting for the tab that makes noise.

What it does

• One tab at a time. The tab that starts playing wins; the other audible tabs are muted.
• Gives the sound back. When it goes quiet, the most recently muted tab is unmuted, then the one before it, and so on.
• Whitelist. Domains that are never muted, whatever else starts playing. Perfect for video calls, meetings or a radio stream.
• Ignore list. Domains that never mute the others, for sites playing short notification sounds or games.
• Click to listen. Switching to a tab the add-on muted gives it the sound back and mutes the rest.
• Never fights you. A tab you muted or unmuted by hand is left alone.

Setting it up

Nothing to configure to get started. The options page lets you fill the two domain lists, one entry per line. Subdomains are included automatically, so youtube.com also covers music.youtube.com. Pasted URLs and comments are accepted, and a live preview shows exactly which domains the add-on understood.

Privacy

Smart Tab Mute collects nothing, sends nothing, and has no access to the content of your pages. It only asks for the permissions it needs to do its job: read the list of tabs and their mute state, and store your settings locally.
