Analyse Internet usage carbon footprint, forked from TheShiftProject Carbonalyser by OMConseil Carbonalyser by OMConseil Carbonalyser by OMConseil

Compare & analyse internet usage carbon footprint of your online services.

Overview

Forked from the ShiftProject add-on.
The original purpose was to visualize the electricity consumption and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions of your internet navigation.

This version allows you to have access to non-aggregated data for each website visited during your internet navigation.

To evaluate these impacts, the add-on:

Measures the quantity of data travelling through your Internet browser and the time spent on each website you visit.
It also calculates the electricity consumption this traffic causes (using the "1byte" model, developed by The Shift Project), and calculates the GHG emissions this electricity consumption leads to, according to the location you provide.

New features

Result table - Show non-aggregated results per website (time spent and data consumption);

Export - Download non-aggregated results as a CSV file;

Whitelist - Choose the websites you want to monitor and limit the analysis to selected websites;

ON/OFF whitelist - Turn the whitelist ON or OFF before or during the analysis.

Import whitelist - Import from a CSV file a list of websites you want to monitor and limit the analysis to those websites

Detect user web innactivity - The extension monitors only the effective time spent on the visited websites

Features from the original version

Run analysis / Stop analysis - run or stop the measuring of data volume travelling through your Internet browser. Results shown in the pop-up window are calculated for the cumulated running time;

Reset data - erase measures and calculations made during the running time to reset the analysis to zero;

Chart area - features rankings of the top 5 websites in terms of data traffic and their share in the total data volume generated by browsing the Internet;

Select your location - allows you to choose the electrical mix to apply in the calculations of GHG emissions (by default, if none is selected, the average world mix is taken).

Results area - features:

-Time during which the device has been running, from the start of the analysis up to the current time;
-Quantity of data used by Internet browsing;
-Electricity consumption generated by data traffic;
-GHG emissions this leads to,
-Comparison of GHG emitted by browsing and GHG emitted by charging a smartphone,
-Comparison of GHG emitted by browsing and GHG emitted by driving a car.
